What Is Spalla Camicia?

The shoulder sets the line

Spalla camicia is the Neapolitan shirt shoulder. Bellucci Napoli describes it as an unpadded shoulder, gathered and set by hand to allow natural movement. It belongs to a tailoring approach that values lightness and softness rather than a visibly built-up shoulder. The effect should be understood in the context of the whole jacket, not treated as an isolated decorative sign.

A shoulder frames the upper body before the rest of the garment is considered. Its line affects the relationship between neck, chest and sleeve. At a fitting, notice how that relationship reads when you stand normally, rather than holding a pose that changes your posture. A jacket should respond to your proportions as they are.

Soft does not mean unsupported

A soft shoulder and a structured interior are not opposites. Bellucci Napoli bespoke and made-to-measure suits and jackets use a full, floating horsehair canvas from shoulder to hem. That internal foundation supports the cloth and helps give the jacket its natural form. Shoulder character and canvas construction answer different questions about how a garment is built.

The house's Neapolitan approach brings together the shoulder, chest, waist and lapel. Hand-rolled lapels and visible pick stitching are part of its construction language. None of these features should be used as a shortcut for assessing the entire fit. A detail is most meaningful when it contributes to a coherent silhouette.

What to notice at a fitting

Look first at balance. Consider whether the chest and shoulder work together, how the sleeve falls and how the jacket moves as you change position. Explain the movements that matter in your own day. Measurements, posture and individual proportions are all part of the Bellucci Napoli consultation and refinement process.

A structured British shoulder presents a different aesthetic starting point, not a universal defect. Both traditions allow individual interpretation. Choosing between them is better approached as a conversation about presence, comfort and proportion than as a contest between countries. The intended use of the jacket should remain central.

The pattern decision

Bespoke begins with an individual pattern, while made to measure refines the Bellucci Napoli house pattern to your measurements. Both services are measured in person in New York, with garments handmade in Naples. Private fittings take place at the Long Island City atelier. Timing and number of fittings depend on the garment; we plan them with you at the first appointment.
